Pain Russe

When we were in Trois Rivieres last week the ladies of the church were talking about traditional Christmas food. There is a special food they have every year on Christmas day called "Pain Russe." It means Russian Bread...but I'm not sure it comes from Russia! They believe it's actullay only made in the area of Trois Rivieres. I asked them to explain it to me, because I love talking about food! You have to use a special kind of bread, so when I saw it at the store, I thought "We've got to try this!" So, here it is:

You start with a loaf of bread that has been sliced horizontally instead of vertically.
Then, top the bottom slice of bread with ham salad.

Top with a slice of bread.

Then, top that slice with Chicken Salad.

Top with a slice of bread.

Then, top with Egg Salad.

Top with another slice of bread.

Finally, top that slice of bread with 8 ounces of cream cheese.

Voila! Pain Russe!
You're probably thinking what I was thinking, "Sounds Pretty Gross" But, we really ended up liking it and deciding it's a keeper for us! I'm not so sure it really belongs on the dinner table at Christmas. We're more of a traditional turkey dinner for Christmas family. I love to try new food and I want to experience "Quebec" while we are here. We sure loved it!

  1. It reminds me of a church dinner finger food fellowship all together :)

  2. I think it looks pretty good, actually! LOL No one in my family would eat it, though, so I won't be trying it. It might make a nice Christmas Eve or day-after-Christmas lunch.
