Settling in with the Mosquitos

When we arrived in St. Barths, Patrick and Josh had everything set up very well. There were still some boxes to unpack, but not many. He arranged things in the kitchen, but told me, to move everything where I wanted. How sweet! I love setting up my own home, although, every few months I end up rearranging things just for fun. We seemed to get used to everthing pretty quick and settle in very well, except for two areas. One is the mosquitos! Oh Wow! For some reason these guys just love us! Patrick, Josh, and I don't seem to get bit very bad, but Elisabeth, Brenna, Silas, and Callie get it the worse. They must be the sweet ones! I brought reppellant and anti-itch cream, but they didn't work very well. Then, we've tried many things from the pharmacy. We've found that the natural Citronella seems to be working pretty well....for now!

Elisabeth counted over 40 bites on one leg! She's been so sweet to help put cream on Callie and Silas.

So, the first few days (and actually still) have been spent trying not to scratch. Such a hard thing to do!

The second thing we had to really adjust to? You'll have to wait for the next post! :o)

  2. Ha Ha. That previous post made me laugh!

I hate dealing with mosquitoes here too. It seems they come in seasons here after they hatch a new batch. Then they are everywhere and annoying.

Is there malaria there on St. Barth's?

  3. yes the mosquitos are no fun! Josh put screens on most of our windows and the others and the doors we close at dusk. If it's any consolation you do seem to adjust to them and then it's not that bad. When we first moved her, we got sores like chicken pox from them. Then the girl's starting getting boils from them. It was awful. Now they just seem to irritate for a little while then you don't notice them til you get a new one.

I burn these really neat mosquito candles. They are made here, but they probably have their own version there. You should check for some. I put them on my candle warmer and they last a long time.

  5. MOm- Don't start worrying! And of course you knew the other thing!

Jessi-I don't think Malaria is very frequent here. But, we do have Dengue Fever. Have you experienced Malaria?

Maria, We are so thankful to have screens on our windows! But, there must be a leak somewhere. The mosquitos have a made a nest or something in the kids rooms. I just had someone tell me yesterday to use Citronella candles all over the house. Inside the house! I always thought you could only use them outside. What do you think?

Bro Fenley-You and Mrs. Anita have been such a blessing to us! Thank you for your prayers and love!

  6. I have read some "home remedies" to protect against mosquitoes. I'm needing to look into it again though because I have huge welts from their bites.

  7. Jessi- Where is PNG?
There are no other missionaries on the island. And as far as we've researched, there have never been any baptist churches started here.
