Silas and I gathered our supplies (gloves, towels, a flashlight and a camera ;o) Trixie is our goat that loves our attention. But we knew something was up when she didn't want us near her. We tried to give her some space and watch from a distance. Her labor seemed to stop when we came near. After about 2 hours she began to deliver her babies in the far corner of her pen. Poor girl struggled some, but she delivered a beautiful doeling that was little, black and white. So cute!!
Then after about 2 minutes she delivered a brown and white spotted buckling. Such cute colors! Then very quickly after that she delivered a pretty large doeling that was all fawn colored. It looked like a deer! This poor, huge baby had been in some stress. Wow! 3 babies again!!
But then we noticed within moments she was ready to deliver another one!! And she had a cute all black doeling. She was working her hardest to clean up all the babies she had delivered in the dirt/sand. But some were struggling with dirt all on their noses. As I cleaned off the ones I could, Silas ran in to get another towel. And out came all of the family, too. It was exciting as we were looking at 4 of the cutest, most diverse babies.
This is Feline. She was our big baby. She struggled with weak legs for the first few days and we had to give her Selenium/ Vitamin B boosters for the first couple of days. But now she's doing great!
The brown and white one is our buckling and we named him Hobbes. I like his spots!!
It was fun introducing Jenna's babies to Trixie's babies. We are having fun watching them all play and hop around together. Baby goats are very entertaining!!
Even though Trixie has some of the cutest babies on our little farm, we probably won't keep any of them. She is half boer/half nubian. The babies sire is a Nigerian, so that makes them have 3 breeds of goats. They just don't make quite as much money as the others. So, we don't keep her babies. But she always delivers such a variety of colors! So part of me is thinking we should keep just one doeling for fun. Oh the decisions of what to do!! Feline? Black Beauty?
Life on Storybook farms is always an adventure!
In April Pippi is due! She is our little Nigerian Dwarf. Her first pregnancy she miscarried. Her second she delivered a stillborn buckling. I'm hoping this time she will have a healthy kid. Or maybe 2. Or more? Stay tuned!
